What is Regional Facilitation?
The Tertiary Education Strategy 2007-2012 identifies a new role for Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) as part of the tertiary education reforms. From 2007, all Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics have been charged with the responsibility for acting as a regional facilitator and producing a Regional Statement outlining their region’s tertiary education needs, gaps and priorities. NorthTec will facilitate this process for the Tai Tokerau region (including the Far North, Whangarei, Kaipara and Rodney Districts).
The Regional Facilitation role is designed to ensure dialogue between stakeholders and tertiary education providers, as well as increasing collaboration between providers in the region.
The Tertiary Education Commission’s other objectives for the regional facilitation include:
- To develop capability at the regional level through collaborative relationships
- To deliver better outcomes for learners and other stakeholders, and
- To offer efficiency benefits for stakeholders and providers alike.

What is a regional statement of tertiary needs, gaps and priorities?
A key function of the regional facilitation role is the development of a high level statement identifying tertiary needs, gaps and priorities for the region.
