Council and Governance

The council is the governing body of NorthTec and is constituted as follows.

 

The NorthTec Council is the governance body for the polytechnic. The Council provides oversight for the financial management and operational performance of NorthTec ensuring that NorthTec achieves its objectives, maintains the quality of the its programme delivery and meets the obligations imposed upon it by central government through the Tertiary Education Commission. The NorthTec Council currently consists of four ministerial appointees and two independent appointees.

 

Vern Dark (Chair)
Vern DarkMr Dark has been on the NorthTec Council since April 2005 and has been reappointed to the role of Council Chair. Mr Dark has a wealth of experience leading businesses and was Managing Director of Fletcher Challenge Petrochemicals, Chief Executive of the Northland Dairy Co-operative and Chief Executive of the Northland Port Corporation.

 

 

 

 


Erima Henare (Deputy Chair)
Erima HenareMr Henare (Ngati Hine, Ngāpuhi) was appointed to the Council in 2010 and has previously provided specialist advice on Mäori issues to NorthTec. Mr Henare is the principal of Koti Whero Ltd and is currently a member of the Waitangi National Trust Board, Chairman of the Māori Language Commission, a member of The Arts Council, Creative New Zealand and a member of the Northland District Health Board. Mr Henare has previously provided specialist advice on Māori issues to NorthTec and has a good understanding of the sector.

 

 

Susan Cullen

Professor Susan Cullen (Ngati Maniapoto) was appointed to the Council in 2010. Ms Cullen has worked for 20 years in tertiary training and education both in New Zealand and internationally. Ms Cullen and her husband operate a dairy farming enterprise in Southland and reside in the Waikato. Ms Cullen has a broad spectrum of interests in educational leadership, community development, employment and trade skills.

 

 

 

 

 

Clare Davies-Colley
Clare Davies-ColleyMrs Davies-Colley has been reappointed to the Council. She commenced her term with the NorthTec Council in 2009.  She is a Chartered Accountant with a background in auditing, financial accounting and business management.  She is currently a director of a number of private companies.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Gwen Edge

Mrs Edge has been reappointed to council and brings more than 20 years of tertiary sector experience to her role. Mrs Edge was NorthTec’s Marketing Coordinator (Schools Liaison) and worked at NorthTec for 24 years. Mrs Edge has also been a member of NorthTec’s TIASA (Tertiary Institutes Allied Staff Association) executive for 22 years, serving as TIASA Chairperson for 10 of those years.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Warren Moyes
Warren MoyesMr Moyes has been reappointed to the Council after commencing his term in 2009. He is the Chairman of Northpower Ltd, Northpower Australia Ltd, West Coast Energy Ltd and a Board member of Tonga Power Ltd.  He has held a number of appointments in the teaching, tourism, agriculture, boating and automotive industries. 

 

 

 

 

 

Ken Rivers

Mr Rivers is the New Zealand Refining Company Chief Executive and he brings over 35 years international experience in the oil industry to the position – and is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and a past Council member of the Institute of Petroleum (UK).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Brian Roberts

Mr Roberts was appointed to the Council in 2010 and is General Manager of Destination Northland. He has had a 37-year career in the New Zealand and international travel industry specialising in consumer marketing areas, having worked for major international airlines such as Air New Zealand and the Passport United Travel Group. Prior to arriving in Northland in 1997, Mr Roberts was Marketing Manager for Tourism Auckland for three years before being approached to move to Northland and set up Destination Northland. He then went on to establish Enterprise Northland in 2001. Mr Roberts is currently responsible for marketing Northland as a visitor destination in partnership with local government and more than 1,000 visitor-related businesses in the region.

Council Honours Awards

Since 2007, the NorthTec Council has given awards to three people per year that have made major contributions to the community. Learn more about Council Honours Awardees.
