NorthTec is proud of its strong relationships with other institutions. These relationships provide our students with "stair casing" opportunities to apply their NorthTec qualifications towards further tertiary study if desired.
New Zealand-based Partnerships
Massey University
In October 2003 Northland took a step forward when NorthTec and Massey University agreed to cooperate in a venture that would improve study and research opportunities in the region.
Under the initial agreement articulation arrangements and academic pathways between qualifications have been negotiated in science, Conservation and Environmental Management, Business and Computing. The agreement also provides a mechanism for much-needed research to assist the further development of the Northland region, including Maori development. To date one collaborative project has been completed. There is a growing range of research needs within Northland and this agreement will enhance the capacity to meet those needs.
The agreement also facilitates cooperation in staff development.
Auckland Metro Group
This group is made up of the Vice Chancellors and Chief Executives of the Universities and Polytechnics in Auckland and Northland and considers common issues that affect their institutions. Currently work is being done on academic pathways between institutions.
The Tertiary Accord of New Zealand (TANZ)
NorthTec is a member of the TANZ network of 6 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics. The vision of TANZ is to be the leader in collaborative applied vocational education and training. The purpose of TANZ is to work collaboratively as an accord to identify, design, develop, deliver and evaluate applied vocational quality products for tertiary learners.
AUT (University)
NorthTec has articulation agreements in Business, Science (Conservation and Environmental Management) and Sports Science with AUT University. These arrangements allow students to study at NorthTec and to transfer to AUT qualifications with credit. For example students completing the Northland Polytechnic Diploma in Sport and Recreation can gain the AUT Bachelor of Sport and Recreation degree by completing the third year of the degree and 2 additional papers. AUT has also agreed that NorthTec can deliver the third year of the degree in Whangarei thus allowing students to complete the degree without leaving the Northland.
University of Auckland
NorthTec is a member of the James Henare Maori Research Centre Advisory Board.
Te Whare Wananga O Awanuiarangi
NorthTec has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Wananga. The two institutions are exploring ways of enhancing the provision of tertiary education in the north including expanding the provision of post graduate study opportunities.
International Partnerships
Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics (China)
University of Hawaii Community Colleges
NorthTec has a letter of understanding and mutual cooperation with the community colleges. Under this arrangement there have been reciprocal staff visits. Student and staff groups from Te Puna O Te Matuaranga have visited Honolulu, Kapi’olani and Hawai’i (Hilo) Community Colleges and a group from Hilo Community College has visited NorthTec.
Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (Canada)
A student exchanges agreement allows NorthTec students to study in Canada at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design as part of their Bachelor of Applied Arts degree.
