Overview
This programme is only available to nurses who have completed a Certificate
in Nursing qualification and want to become an Enrolled Nurse without any
restrictions on their scope of practice.


Content
Students are required to show that they have completed 90 credits at Level
5. These 90 credits make up Part 2 of the Diploma in Enrolled Nursing and
include:

  • Enrolled Nurse Practice: Mental Health 30 credits
  • Enrolled Nurse Practice: Acute Care 30 credits
  • Enrolled Nurse Practice: Rehabilitation 30 credits

If you have completed the Certificate in Nursing programme you will be
eligible for credit recognition for some of the Diploma in Enrolled Nursing
courses. Credit recognition will be granted for all Part 1 courses of the
Enrolled Nursing course. Please see below for the Part 2 courses that will be eligible for credit transfer:

 

  • Those who have completed the Northland Polytechnic Certificate in Nursing (Long Term Care and Rehabilitation) will be given credit recognition for the Diploma in Enrolled Nursing course 5546.506 “Enrolled Nurse Practice: Rehabilitation”, based on their nursing practice. They will be required to complete the two specialist level 5 papers – Acute Care and Mental Health.

 

  • Those who have completed the Northland Polytechnic Certificate in Nursing (Medical Surgical) will be given credit recognition for the Diploma in Enrolled Nursing course 5546.507 “Enrolled Nurse Practice: Acute Care”, based on their nursing practice. They will be required to complete the two specialist level 5 papers – Rehabilitation and Mental Health.

 

  • Students who have completed the Northland Polytechnic Certificate in
    Nursing (Long term Care and Rehabilitation) and the Northland Polytechnic Certificate in Nursing (Medical Surgical) will be given credit recognition for either Diploma in Enrolled Nursing: Rehabilitation or Diploma in Enrolled Nursing: Acute Care based on their nursing practice.


In order to be given credit recognition for either Enrolled Nurse Practice:
Rehabilitation or Enrolled Nurse Practice: Acute Care, applicants must have
completed a minimum of one year working in the area of practice identified
on their practising certificate.

 

Applicants, who have completed a Certificate in Nursing but have not had
a minimum of 12 months work in the clinical area defined in their scope of
practice, will be required to complete all three Part 2 level 5 courses.

Students who have completed a Certificate in Nursing in previous years
may use their Certificate in Nursing courses towards a Diploma in Enrolled
Nursing up until March 2012. Thereafter they must apply for recognition of
Prior Learning for Diploma in Enrolled Nursing courses.


Students must apply for credit recognition for the Diploma in Enrolled
Nursing Part 1 foundation courses. They will be required to enrol in and
complete all the Part 2 level 5 specialist courses, in addition to any
foundation courses not credited. E.g. If you completed the Certificate
of Nursing (Long Term Care & Rehabilitation) and have been working in
this area for 12 months, you will be required to complete Enrolled Nurse
Practice: Acute Care and Enrolled Nurse Practice: Mental Health.

All students will be required to sit the Nursing Council of New Zealand State
Final Examination on 17 July 2012.

Career opportunities for Enrolled Nurses exist with both the private and public health sector.
 

Opportunities for Further Study
Students who complete this programme may consider a future application to enter the Bachelor of Nursing programme. The Diploma in Enrolled Nursing will not guarantee entry to the Bachelors programme, but graduates who perform well will be viewed favourably when applying for entry into the Bachelor of Nursing programme.


Admission Information
All applicants will be required to attend an interview at NorthTec’s
Raumaunga Campus. Places for this programme are limited and where
applicants exceed available places, selection will be based on evidence of
interest, nursing experience, motivation and academic achievement.
