Overview
This course will cover the making and theory of pärö, kete waikawa, whiri, muka extraction, kete whiri, tamata and whitiki whiri. Students will learn how to gather, prepare and store natural resources for this course. The research focuses on patterns used in raranga generally.


Content
Graduates will be able to:

  • Weave kete using flax strips
  • Extract muka from the flax blades for finer weaving
  • Discuss the seasonal nature that influences gathering of natural resources
  • Identify major weavers throughout Aotearoa
  • Research and apply patterns and design used in raranga to the development of their own raranga work
  • Discuss and apply tikanga as applied to raranga practices.

Admission Information
Applicants must be 16 years of age or older at the time of enrolment, unless approved otherwise by the Programme Leader.


Students must be able to demonstrate evidence of suitability based on
interview and/or portfolio.


Applicants for whom English is not their first language require a minimum IELTS score of 5.5.
