Overview
This qualification is designed for vocational tutors and workplace trainers whose learners, trainees or apprentices need support developing their literacy and numeracy skills. This Level 5, 40 credit qualification teaches you how to develop adult learners’ literacy and numeracy skills within a training or education programme. |
Content
Graduates will be able to:
- Identify the literacy and numeracy demand of your programmes
- Identify a learner’s literacy and/or numeracy strengths and needs
- Assess a person’s literacy and numeracy progress in their training programme
- Embed literacy and numeracy skills into your programme and use appropriate teaching strategies
- Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching strategies and activities to support the training or education programmes
- Understand the historical and theoretical issues underpinning adult literacy and numeracy education in Aotearoa New Zealand
- Have an understanding of Maori Adult Literacy
The NCALE course The NCALE course is a combination of 2 two-day workshops and participation in online forum discussions.
The duration of the course is approximately six weeks.
Participants will participate in Workshop activities, self directed learning between and after workshops. The course facilitator is available for online, email and phone contact with all participants. The aim of the course is not for participants to become literacy specialists but for them to better meet the needs of their learners while focussing on the core content of their courses. |
Career Options
All tutors teaching at level 2 to 4 must have the qualification by 2012. |

Qualifications Gained
National Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education (Vocational / Workplace).
This Qualification is for Vocational or Workplace tutors. This is a Level 5, 40 credit course made up mostly of a 30 credit Unit Standard 21204 – Develop Adult Learner’s Literacy and Numeracy Skills within a Training or Education Programme. For the other 10 credits e gather evidence from the coursework to enable them to gain Unit Standard 7097 – Facilitate interactive learning sessions for adults. If tutors have the units from the appropriate domain they can be cross credited. |
