Applied Environmental Science
With abundant natural resources at our fingertips, Northland is the perfect place to study environmental management.

We take full advantage of the area’s marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. What you learn in the classroom will be put into practice while working alongside industry professionals, iwi and community groups. Students are encouraged to support local environmental and pest control projects.
NorthTec’s environmental management tutors are experts in their fields and their enthusiasm for the local environment is inspiring. Our programmes incorporate pathways to help you progress from certificate to degree level. The qualifications you’ll gain will lead to employment or further study. If your dream is to work as an environmental ranger, biodiversity officer, pest control officer, ecologist or eco-tourism operator, investing in environmental studies is a good choice.
Conservation and Environmental Management The Certificate in Conservation and Environmental Management introduces students to the ecological and resource management principles of environmental issues. Students are prepared for careers as ranger assistants or field technicians or to continue their study with the Diploma in Conservation and Environmental Management. The diploma prepares students to monitor and manage human impacts on the environment. The new Bachelor of Applied Science (Biodiversity Management Major) provides Northland students with access to a degree qualification in conservation management.
Hunting and Pest Control NorthTec offers the only Certificate in Professional Hunting and Pest Control in New Zealand. Students learn how to conduct and manage hunting and pest control contracts to maximise capture rates and safeguard New Zealand’s biodiversity from pest species. Graduates have gone on to work as private pest controllers, sanctuary managers, island pest control officers with organisations such as the Department of Conservation and Target Pest Solutions.
Marine Adventure and Eco-Tourism The Certificate in Marine Adventure and Eco-Tourism equips students for a career in outdoor recreation and maritime tourism. Students will gain marine safety and survival skills, study the marine environment, and learn about New Zealand’s eco-tourism trade and how sustainable practices can be integrated into tourism. This Kerikeri-based course is perfect for students who want to learn what Northland’s marine environment has to offer.
If you value our natural resources and want to preserve them while learning in our unique environment, these programmes are for you.
