Do you want to enter the construction industry as an apprentice carpenter? Or perhaps just get a taste of what carpentry is all about to find out if it’s for you. Or maybe you want the skills to do basic construction work and maintenance on your own home. NorthTec offers it all.
Our National Certificate in Carpentry is a one year full time course aimed at preparing you for an apprenticeship with a building company. During the year with us you will cover all the theory units required for your apprenticeship, plus you're required get hands-on work experience two days a week with a builder. The practical experiences help to reinforce what you learn in the classroom. You will learn the language of building, get into good work habits and equip yourself with the sort of skills employers are looking for. This is a great way to get your foot in the door and get an understanding of what it takes to be a builder. We also manage an apprenticeship scheme which we use to assess your practical skills against the practical units in National Certificate in Carpentry with regular site visits throughout the term of your apprenticeship.
The Certificate in Elementary Construction is a six month course taught in locations throughout Northland. This is a great opportunity to find out if carpentry is a career you want to pursue. You’ll learn the basic skills required to work on your own place such as building decks and paths. Students not only come out with practical skills, but also with credits that count as part of an apprenticeship – making this a very useful stepping stone into our National Certificate in Carpentry, or straight into an apprenticeship. And it’s not just one for the guys – more and more women are taking our courses and making use of the skills in their own homes – or going on to apprenticeships.
