Travel Information between NorthTec and Auckland for International Students and Visitors

The travel time from Auckland International Airport to NorthTec is 30 minutes by air and less than three hours by road (depending on traffic flow). Travel time from central Auckland is two hours by car.

Options for travelling to NorthTec from Auckland are listed below:

Shuttle: $200 per person.  The NorthTec International Office will book this for you subject prepayment 14 days in advance.  (If more than one person is using the shuttle option, price per person is reduced). The shuttle driver will greet you at the arrivals lounge.

Air: Domestic flights are available from Auckland to Whangarei.  This price varies from approximately $105 - $240 depending on availability of cheap flights.  The further in advance you can book, the cheaper the flight.  Bookings should be made by your travel agent in your home country to ensure your international and domestic flights are linked. Bookings can also be made online. Auckland airport offers a free bus transfer between the international and domestic terminals. Get information on traveling between terminals.

Bus: A shuttle bus leaves every 15 minutes from Auckland airport to Auckland City. Cost: about $12. Then there are two buses that you can choose from to get to Whangarei. Bookings can be made online. The following are the websites for the shuttle and buses:

Naked Bus - Leaves from Downtown Auckland at the bottom of Queen St (has map on the website). The Naked Bus costs approximately $22.00. 

North Liner - Leaves from Sky City in the middle of Auckland City (shuttle from airport goes here). Fares on the Northliner range from $21.00 (non-refundable) to $40.00 (refundable). Student discounts are available with suitable identification (i.e. Student ID card).

Auckland Airport  - The bus from Auckland will take you to Bank St in Whangarei.  This is the main street in Whangarei.  Local buses leave from Rose St, opposite the Bank St bus stop where the bus from Auckland stops.  The bus to NorthTec is the Morningside/Raumanga bus.  The bus driver can tell you when to get off.  Buses are $3 per trip.

Taxi:  A taxi ride from Auckland to Whangarei would be a very expensive option, and is not recommended. If you wish to take up this option, we suggest you get several quotes from taxi companies.

Rental Cars:  A number of car rental companies operate from Auckland Airport.  However, many do not allow a one-way trip to  Whangarei, but expect a return to Auckland Airport.  Companies that allow one-way hirage are:
