NorthTec is firmly committed to providing equity in education and welcomes students with a disability.
"Disability" is a very broad term which includes people experiencing a wide range of barriers to their learning, due to impairment, including:
- Physical impairment
- Medical condition
- Sensory impairment
- Mental health problems
- Learning disabilities
My name is Hamish McCallum and I am the NorthTec Student Disability Advisor.
If you have a disability, or impairment, I can arrange to meet with you and to assess your needs (please make an appointment, as I am sometimes working at other NorthTec campuses).

My hours are 8.30am to 2.30pm Monday to Thursday.
My office is at the Raumanga campus, in A Block, on the ground floor, behind the registry.
I can liaise with your tutors to ensure that we can best support you in your study. I can also assist students with disabilities by arranging appropriate, disability-related study support services and specialist resources such as:
- Assistive technology (eg, Digital voice recorders, and visually enlarging software, large screens, magnifying sheets, and adaptive keyboards)
- Adaptations /furniture (eg, appropriate seating, access around campus)
- Special arrangements for assessments and exams (eg, extra time, separate room, reader/writer)
- Practical support (eg, interpreters/communicators, notetakers)
- Liaison with community support agencies
- Funding for vision, hearing, & for medical assessments

Mhairi Collins
Mhairi is a student in the Bachelor of Social Services Degree Programme at NorthTec. She is also the author of No Going Back, a true story of her journey to recovery from a traumatic brain injury. This book can be borrowed from the NorthTec library.
