Imagine the satisfaction of looking at a house and knowing that you built it. The skills you learn here will be with you for life – whether you use them to step into a carpentry apprenticeship, or to maintain and renovate your own home.

Carpentry, Building and Construction Courses

Do you want to enter the construction industry as an apprentice carpenter? Or perhaps just get a taste of what carpentry is all about to find out if it’s for you. Or maybe you want the skills to do basic construction work and maintenance on your own home.  NorthTec offers it all.

Our National Certificate in Carpentry is a one year full time course aimed at preparing you for an apprenticeship with a building company. During the year with us you will cover all the theory units required for your apprenticeship, plus you're required to get hands-on work experience two days a week with a builder. The practical experiences help to reinforce what you learn in the classroom. You will learn the language of building, get into good work habits and equip yourself with the sort of skills employers are looking for. This is a great way to get your foot in the door and get an understanding of what it takes to be a builder. We also manage an apprenticeship scheme which we use to assess your practical skills against the practical units in the National Certificate in Carpentry, with regular site visits throughout the term of your apprenticeship.

The Certificate in Elementary Construction is a six-month course taught in locations throughout Northland. This is a great opportunity to find out if carpentry is a career you want to pursue. You’ll learn the basic skills required to work on your own place such as building decks and paths. Students not only come out with practical skills, but also with credits that count as part of an apprenticeship – making this a very useful stepping stone into our National Certificate in Carpentry, or straight into an apprenticeship. And it’s not just one for the guys – more and more women are taking our courses and making use of the skills in their own homes – or going on to apprenticeships.

The aim of the Certificate in Elementary Construction is to provide training across a wide range of construction and maintenance areas by gaining practical experience on small building projects.

It will enable you to undertake construction jobs within your local community that will give you the skills to have a better chance to become employed and to carry out commerical/house maintenance work.

The programme is designed so that community-based practical work can be done while on the course that directly relates to the course content (Building Construction and Allied Trades and the National Certificate in Carpentry unit standards), where you will learn how to safely operate fixed machinery and power tools. The theory covers a number of core skills that include: learning how to read plans, drawing detailed project sketches, how to construct garden furniture/small sheds, maintenance work etc.

This course provides you with a qualification that is recognised by industry.

  • This qualification can lead onto the National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4)
and the iTab Carpentry Apprenticeship training scheme.
  • Earn 60 NZQA credits in Building Construction and Allied Trades (Level 2) and
National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 3)
  • Quality Tools/safety boots will be provided at start of course.
Students who graduate will be able to keep these tools.
  • Attain skills to offer potential employers.
